affecting almost every state in the nation. and the top detective in the blade runner murder investigation now pulled off the case because the cop faces attempted murder charges of his own. and a shootout on the las vegas strip with innocent people caught right in the middle. >> a little before 4:30 this morning there apparently was a rolling gun battle on the strip. >> i seen a range rover and mazerati cruising down the boulevard. >> tonight, death and destruction on the vegas strip. but first from fox news thursday night the case against the blade runner oscar pistorius took a bizarre turn when we learned the lead detective faces attempted murder charges of his own for firing shots at a bus full of

people while investigators say he was drunk. the detective's boss pulled him from the case. the khat reportedly denies he was drunk when opened fire and that he and his colleagues were only shooting at the mini bus wheels. either way it is a mess. south africa police replaced the investigator with someone they call the nation's top detective but it is too soon to know whether it may have already damaged the prosecution case against the blade runner. he admits that he did kill his magazine model girlfriend at his home on valentine's day. he claims he thought she was an intruder but prosecutors say it was murder plain and simple. greg palkot with the news live in johannesburg, south africa for us. that and the detective already testified in pistorius before bail hearing. >> he was on the stand getting the over from the presiding judge this time. we were in the courtroom as

well and i caught up with him on the sidelines of the proceedings and asked him what he thought of his testimony on wednesday when so clearly botched the presentation. his reply, so-so. an understatement. then i asked him about the attempted murder charges from the incident a few years back. he told me he thought the charges had been dropped. now, along with the replacement, police late on thursday said the probe into the oscar pistorius shooting would have national priority. it will take a lot to get by all of the damage done to this case this week, shep. >> shepard: how you is the blade runner taking all of this? >> in the courtroom today his head was bowed for just about the entire proceedings. four or five hours. at one point i saw him crying. he might be heartened by some indications we are getting. legal experts telling us there is a good chance the judge might decide to let him out on bail. he might also have other reasons to be glum.

despite all of the bungling this week there is still a lot of potentially damning evidence still to collect in the killing of reeva steenkamp. we are told shorts might just stick with the very tough premeditated murder charge and we could find out as early as friday, shep. >> shepard: greg palkot live in johannesburg. a fox weather alert now. if you are in the midwest batten down the hatches. giant winter storm that started in california is now barreling across the plains and by the time all is said and done this system will have hit just about every single state in the lower 48. take a look at the weather map. the folks in the center of this thing could see a foot and a half of snow. talking, nebraska,, kansas, parts of missouri. and this is the scene in st. louis. in other area, whiteout conditions. a blizzard with blinding snow. impassible roads. flights canceled all over the place. and this is wichita, kansas. because the storm is so

powerful there may also be thunder and lightning, hail, damaging winds. even isolated tornadoes at the southern end of the storm. mike tobin is live in omaha, nebraska with more. how is it going there? wow. >> reporter: the big rigs doing exactly what the road crews are wanting them to do. pulled off to the side of the road and they are taking a break. you can see how the snow is being driven by the wind. stick to the roads. roads slick and visibility poor out there. snow drifts building out on the road. the good news is that no one was caught by surprise. businesses were closed. schools were shut down. people largely are staying home and that is giving the snowplows room to work. they are running the routes pretty much hik like clockwork. their schedules are maxed out and they have a long night ahead of them. >> shepard: having trouble with the roads? >> the people electing to get out there the roads are slick. a lot of cars sliding off the roads. in a couple of instances we had

big rigs slide right into the snowplow. nobody was hurt but the snowplows are taken out of commission when they are needed most. >> shepard: let's get right to the extreme weather center and chief meteorologist rak rick reichmuth. this thing is huge. >> where mike is in omero ma maybe another or 4-inches continuing to fall as the upper level disturbance continues to pull out here across parts of the plain. continue to see that probably another six hours of that snow. a little further to the east here, saw a lot of icing today across much of southern missouri and that is the worst kind of conditions on the roads and trees and power lines and now spread a little eastward across parts of the ohio valley. rough go. stay off of the roads if you can here tonight. across southern, illinois, indiana and parts of northern kentucky. i have been showing this, got to show this. such incredible drought, some of the worst droughts across parts of the plains. this kind of snow is exactly what we need and we will get a bit more of it. over 14-inches in wichita.

most of what we will see now is towards the northeast of that. as you were saying, shepard, a severe side of it. tornado warnings throughout the day today. for now, parts of laz heading into southern areas of mississippi. as the daylight ends less of a threat of tornadoes and more of a threat of wind. i want to just take you forward over the next say 18 hours or so you you see the snow pulls to the north and rain spreads off towards the east and by tomorrow afternoon start to see the mix here across parts of virginia and maryland and north carolina. the last thing we are going to do with this is a potential kind of coastal storm bringing snow to the northeast on sunday and very significant rain to the south, potential flooding across the southeast. we have about another 3 or 4 days before we completely done with this storm. >> shepard: spring is not all that far away. thank you. a fire fight on the las vegas strip and people are dead tonight. at least one of the shooters is still on the run. ahead, the gunshots and the explosion and the manhunt for

>> shepard: three people are now confirmed dead, six others wounded after a crazy car to car shootout and crash that caused a firey explosion in the heart of the las vegas strip right in front of the bellagio. cops in three states are searching for a number of suspects in a black range rover. happened a little after 4:00 in the morning at the corner of las vegas boulevard and flamingo road right in front of bellagio and caesars palace. there was some sort of a fight at a hotel. a short time later witnesses say somebody in the range rover chased down somebody else in a

maserati sports car and opened fire. >> i seen the range rover and the maserati racing down the at the maserati andy the range the next thing you know there was a big explosion and three or four other cars. i ran over to help the dude in the maserati and tried to give him cpr. he was breathing at that time but the ambulance came and i don't think he made it. >> he did not make it and neither can the driver of the taxi cab or the taxi passenger. it likely exploded because it may have been running on propane. matt is live for us tonight. i understand that investigators are looking into is surveillance video. >> yeah, and sheppard, as you know, las vegas has many is surveillance cameras not just in the casinos and hotels but also outside of the resorts and also a lot of the major intersections in las vegas have cameras for traffic purposes. the las vegas sheriff doug

las vegas boulevard is still shut down at this hour, going on 12 hours which is very rare for las vegas. >> this sort of thing in the middle of the strip. thank god this doesn't happen much. >> absolutely. and because of that you might be able to see some of the pedestrians that are walking around on the sidewalk here but traffic you got the casino workers and tourists trying to get to the casinos and they can't right now. a tough go. >> matt from fox 5 vegas. tank you. a small private jet aborted its landing and slammed into a utility pole and burst into flames. five people died. two others hurt. happened last night outside an airport in east georgia. a colleague said five of the passengers worked at a vascular clinic in nearby augusta known as the vein guys. one survivor listed critical in a hospital tonight. united airlines announcing it will not add the 787 dreamliner to the schedule at least until june. airlines around the world bounded the new boeing jet last

month after a string of problems including a battery fire. investigators are trying to solve the issue but there is no fix yet. united is a the only u.s. airline that has the dreamliner. if they find a fix earlier than june they will consider putting the jet back on the schedule. a former mayor accused of ripping off citizens and nearly bankrupting his own city did it because he is illiterate and uneducated. the scandal rocked the los angeles suburb of bell a couple of years back. prosecutor charged the former mayor there on the left. we have a picture of him but apparently i can't show it to you. charged the former mayor and other city officials with illegally paying them isselves huge salaries. nearly three times median income of residents in the town all as the economy was tanking before their eyes. the mayor made close to $100,000 a year for a part-time job. prosecutors say that the ex-mayor knew exactly what he

was doing. he and other city workers raised property taxes, hiked fees for businesses and used other shady measures to pay. the lawyer claimed the one time city leader cannot read and never graduated from grade school. a convicted killer on death row gets another peeve. reprieve. three days after the state of georgia was to execute an jen mate the supreme court is back in the mix. tense moments in court as prosecutors question a woman who admits that she killed her ex-boyfriend but you says she can't remember stabbing him. oh, yeah, she remembers the shooting part but not the stabbing. the 27 stabbings. that is coming up. to grow, we have to boost our social media visibility.

>> shepard: for more than five years on "the fox report" we have been reporting on the saga of drew peterson the former illinois police sergeant who is seemed to keep losing his wifes. now, now we know he will likely die in prison. a judge in joliet, illinois sentenced the convicted murderer to 38 years for killing his third wife. the math indicates he will leakily die there. as you recall a jif convicted peterson for the 2004 death of kathleen savio. the defense claimed she drown. the jury realized you can't drown without water. peterson's fourth wife is still missing. he is a suspect in her disappearance way back in 2007 and in 2008 i asked peterson about that. here. >> the neighbors said that they saw you carrying out a big blue barrel that would be big enough. >> again, that is not what we agreed to talk about.

choked up a bit and repeated i don't deserve this, i don't deserve this. >> shepard: appears to be a good performer over the years. seems the prosecutor was unimpressed with today's performance. >> he says usually little or nothing. today he said a lot and offered this assessment of peterson's performance. his proclamation of innocence on the stand. >> to come in and screech that he didn't kill kathy, that is is the guy that killed kathy you got glimpse into the soul. and the nonsense about her head on the table he couldn't have cared less. we all got an opportunity to see a psychopath reveal himself in open court. we don't normally get that chance. >> reporter: glasgow said it was the most satisfying moment in his prosecution career. he also says they will soon be taking a look at stacey

peterson case as well. >> steve brown outside the courthouse in joliet. for the first time prosecutors had their chance to question the woman accused of shooting her boyfriend, stabbing him 27 times and slitting his throat from ear to ear. they got right to her memory or apparent lack thereof. yesterday, jodi arias talked about the day back in 2008 when her ex-body slammed her against the bathroom tiles. she said she ran and grabbed his gun which went off after he lunged at her. she says she can't remember stabbing him or are even teaing a knife to his throat. when the prosecutor pressed her listen to what jodi arias had to say to him. >> you say that you have memory problems but it dehe pends on the circumstance, right? >> that's right. >> and give me the factorsers i don't want to know about a specific circumstance. what factors influenced your having a memory problem? >> usually when men like you are screaming at me or grilling me or someone like travis doing

the same. >> but she foregot the 27 stabbings. keep in mind jodi arias previously testified that the shooting was no accident at all. that she fired the gun in self-defense. many stories. cross examination continues. a convicted killer living on borrowed time in georgia just got another reprieve. the united states supreme court declined to lift an order that delayed the execution of a guy named warren hill. he killed his girlfriend back in the '80s and a few years later used a nail studded board to kill a fellow prisoner. his lawyers say he is mentally disabled and it would be unconstitutional to put them to death but prosecutors say the defense hasn't fully proved his disability. georgia officials are expected to run out of the drug they use for lethal injections possibly as early as next week. run out of the drug. so hill's fate is still very much up in the air. washington's deep spending cuts set to take effect just more than a week from now unless lawmakers can reach a

i should say accusations of a contaminated crime scene and a former lead detective now facing charges of his own have is some reporters calling the case south africa's o.j. simpson. "the fox report's" chief correspondent jonathan hunt is with us. the biggest similarity here is probably possible evidence contamination. >> remember the questions about bloody glove in the o.j.j. simpson case. similar questions being raised about the handling of evidence at the scene where oscar pistorius was alleged to have murdered reeva steenkamp. the lead investigator did not wear protective shoe covers when first walked the crime scene. they found illegal ammunition there but they didn't secure it and in fact allowed friends of pistorius to walk away with it. then the claims about testosterone being present. they had to walk those back and say they haven't determined yet what that substance is. none of this according to judge

napolitano is good for the prosecution. listen. >> the whole focus of the case has shifted from what pistorius is alleged to have done to what the state did. that is a disaster for the state. >> now, as judge napolitano also says the lead investigator may have been removed but they can never remove the fact that he was the first one to look at scene. >> shepard: you listed similarities to the o.j. case but there are differences as well. >> the greatest similarity is simply the fact that you have a national sports hero here accused of murdering a beautiful woman with whom he was connected. but very important differences. for instance, race was obviously a major factor in the o.j. case. it is not a factor in this one. and then semiconductorly, we have no trial by jury in south africa. this case will be heard and decided when it comes to full trial by a single judge. but one more similarity to end on, is shep.

the o.j. case gripped the world, made, damaged and destroyed some reputations. the pistorius case doing the same thing. new warnings from the white house about the deep budget cuts set to take effect next week. of course, hallmakers could easily prevent the cuts by just saying no cuts. so far they have not been able to reach a deal that sim is many or even more complicated. today the feds and the travel industry trade group warned the cuts would hit airports hard, leading to longer waits at security checkpoints. longer waits for planes to take off. even waits up to four hours to clear customs. the national park service warns it would have to scale back services, even closing some camp grounds and tourist sites. the president warned the cuts can cost american jobs and hurt the u.s. economy. not everybody is buying the predictions. gop senator rand pauline dismissing the president's warnings as histrionics and

urging fellow republicans to call the president's bluff. mike emanuel live for us. what is the white house saying? >> putting the pressure on the republicans to act. trying to put the spot light on the cuts scheduled for march 1. a house leading democrat on what it all means. >> in plain english sequester equals massive job lots and massive disruption in important investments for our kids and national security and for our public health and for other things that help our economy grow and allow us to maintain our competitive edge. >> fox news has learned fbi director robert muller warned agents yesterday that they will likely be furloughed due to the ongoing budget battle in washington. meanwhile, today the white house made this appeal. >> there is some responsibility here on the republican side to do what the president has done

which is to hear what the american people are saying which is please compromise. please be reasonable. please do not adopt positions that represent a my way or the highway approach. >> reporter: the retiring secretary of defense leon panetta says if the cuts take effect the u.s. would become a second rate power. >> shepard: what are you hear interesting republicans, mike? >> he are in criticizing president obama for saying unless he gets a second tax hike in eight weeks, criminals about le released and meat at the grocery store won't be inspected. eric cantor says after four years of deficits and mountains of debt to our children and grandchildren it is time for smart choices that cut, washington, spending and achieve real balance. today the president called house speaker boehner and senator mcconnell. no details released but gop aides released he should call harry reid from his own party and who coals the senate.

>> shepard: secretary of defense leon panetta also warns the cuts with hit the pentagon especially hard. while a great deal of the money would come from military training units 000s of civilians could face big pay cuts and even layoffs. particularly in two states. jennifer griffin at the pentagon for us tonight. >> reporter: iif the deep budgt cuts go into effect in 8 days time the hardest hit states will be california and virginia. 17% of the defense cuts in virginia will likely fall on one community known as hampton roads. in fact, the human impact of the sequester on small businesses in this area, these businesses contract to the navy, it is already being felt. tom taylor owns a ship repair business near norfolk. some of his contracts with the navy are already in jeopardy. >> it is not like turning on a picket. you don't turn it on and turn it off. if it is canceled these things are are months or years in the planning stage.

if they are canceled they don't come right back, you know. so that is pretty alarming. >> i want to know when am i looking dark am i getting laid off in march or april. in you are one of those people living pay check to pay check then you are -- you have no secondary plan and i think this is going to be horrible. it is going a cause a lot of stress. >> i'm very concerned about the economy here. it could be devastate. i went through this in california where we took huge defense cuts and it decimated the economy in sacramento. >> reporter: ironically one of the pentagon offices hardest hit by the civilian layoffs is the budget office where civilians right now are trying to figure out who gets furloughed in the military and how to deal with the budget cuts. they will be among those who will themselves be furloughed if this isn't sorted out before march 1. >> jennifer griffin at the pentagon. thanks. looks live as expected all along the president's pick for defense secretary has the votes

>> shepard: you might consider saying no to the scan the next time you hit your head. a group representing some 350,000 doctors today added to its list of overused and almost always unnecessary tests and treatments. many of those procedures common practice. for instance, these doctors say most people should avoid mris or other types of imaging for lower back pain. they say stress tests basically useless. for folks with no signs of heart disease. and that an annual pap test is not necessary for healthy women over the age of 30. they say every three years is just fine. often times they say these procedures simply drive up medical costs and run the risk of doing more harm than good. >> much of the new research shows that many of these interventions not only don't add to the health of a patient but actually can cause excess radiation exposure or risk of actual invasive complications.
